Govt. expects to complete resettling in East within this year – Hon.Rishad Bathiudeen

Thursday, 11 October 2007

The Government has taken immediate measures to resettle another 9,158 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) starting from the 18th of this month. Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services, Rishad Bathiudeen said that under this programme 2523 families in five Grama Niladari (GN) Divisions of the Chenkalady District Secretariat are to be resettled in 3 days. These five Grama Niladari Divisions are Koduvamadu,Pankudavely, Veppavedduvan, Karadiyanaru and Marapalam.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Resettlement has commenced several infrastructure development projects in the area. These development projects include road developments, installing of power supply systems, establishing shops and other institutions such as Cooperative shops and Post Offices. All the eight schools in the area that were functioning smoothly before the terror attacks will commence educational activities from the 22nd of this month.

As majority of the people who live in these areas were engaged in farming and agricultural sectors the Government has made all the necessary arrangements including the providing of agricultural and farming equipment to the newly settled persons to commence their livelihood activities. “We expect to start the cultivation process from this season,” Minister Bathiudeen added.

As a part of the Government’s programme to provide dry rations for 6 months, on arrival dry rations adequate for 2 weeks will be handed over to each family.

Minister Bathiudeen said that the resettlement programme in the other six Grama Niladari Divisions of the Chenkalady District Secretariat will commence as soon as the Security Forces complete de-mining process. It is reported that before withdrawal the LTTE terrorists have planted thousands of land mines in these areas. That is the main cause hindering the resettlement programmes, Minister said.
